Heartstone Herbal School - Herbal Medicine
ADVANCED HERBAL MEDICINE SERIES

The Advanced Herbal Medicine Series offers an opportunity to deepen our knowledge and skills in herbal medicine.  This program is open to anyone who has completed a foundational course in herbal medicine or has equivalent life experience.  This includes herbalists, naturopaths, nurses & nurse practitioners, physicians, PA's, midwives, and all health care practitioners who are interested in broadening their knowledge of natural healing.

2012 DATES:
June 29-July 1, July 27-29, September 21-23, & October 5-7

Each Friday, the weekend will begin with an opening circle and two classes:

Anatomy & Physiology will be taught by Heartstone's Tammi Sweet.
Clinical Intake & Assessment
will be taught by Kara Timmins.
Tammi & Kara will tailor the focus of their classes to the theme or topics of the weekend.


Kara, a clinical herbalist and physician's assistant, recently moved into the Ithaca community and opened Apothekara, a beautiful herbal apothecary in downtown Ithaca where she offers classes and herbal consultations.  As part of the Advanced Series, Kara will read and give individual feedback on a case study journal assignment. 

Saturday & Sunday will feature one of our guest teachers who will offer their wisdom and experiences from the field.  2012 is our first year to offer the Advanced Series and we're very delighted with the teachers who are joining us!

June 29 - July 1
JAMES GREEN                
Herbalist, educator & author of The Herbal Handbook for Men and the Herbal Medicine Makers Handbook: A Home Manual,  James was the owner and director of the California School of Herbal Studies for 17 years. He conducts workshops on male health and herbal medicine-making throughout Canada and the US. James is also the founder of Simplers Botanical Company and a founding member of the American Herbalists Guild & United Plant Savers. 



July 27 - 29
AVIVA ROMM
Physician, herbalist & practicing midwife, Aviva is an expert in childbirth & women & children's health.  She is the author of The Natural Pregnancy Book, Naturally Healthy Babies & children, Botanical Medicine for Women's Health among others.

A graduate of Yale School of Medicine, Aviva completed her intern year in Internal Medicine at Yale where she was instrumental in creating the school’s first integrative medicine curriculum. She has served as the President of the American Herbalists Guild for over a decade, the Medical Director for American Herbal Pharmacopoeia (AHP), and a member of the advisory board for Yale Integrative Medicine. She  created curricula on integrative internal medicine and pediatrics for residency programs at the Yale School of Medicine and was an expert on botanical medicine for pregnancy, lactation, and pediatrics for the Botanical Safety Handbook. In addition, Aviva has served on the advisory board for the American Botanical Council and has been an adjunct faculty member at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy.
Aviva is currently completing her residency in Family Medicine in the Cambridge Health Alliance and at Tufts University in Boston, MA.
 
Aviva combines her skills as a physician, midwife, and herbalist to offer comprehensive, insightful clinical care, education, writing, and consulting on general health, pregnancy and birth, women’s health, women’s and pediatric botanical medicine, health and ecology, and natural living. Aviva is also the mother of four spectacular, grown-up children.
 
Aviva's goal is to foster the growth of a health-based, trans-disciplinary health care model while promoting greater access to health care. Her primary commitment is to practicing and teaching clinical medicine, promoting an ecological basis for health, and continuing to care for mothers, children, and families. Her areas of research include, botanical medicine with a focus on the needs of women and children, improving maternity care models, mind-body medicine, and the impact of environment on health. She is a gardener, artist, and visionary physician.

September 21-23
MARY BOVE
Naturopathic physician & midwife, Mary is the author of Encyclopedia of Natural Healing for Children & Infants, numerous journal articles & recorded lectures & co-author of Herbs for Women's Health.

Mary obtained her Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine and Midwifery Certification from Bastyr College of Natural Health Sciences in Seattle, WA. She received the Diploma of Phytotherapy/Herbal Medicine at the School of Phytotherapy in Great Britain.  As a young herbalist she started her studies with Native American medicine woman, Norma Myers in British Columbia, Canada. Dr. Bove practices Naturopathic Family Medicine, including women healthcare, well pregnancy care, and pediatric medicine at the Brattleboro Naturopathic Clinic, Brattleboro, VT.

Dr Bove served as a full-time faculty member at Bastyr University in Seattle WA and chaired the departments of Botanical Medicine and Naturopathic Midwifery. She currently serves as adjunct faculty for the Scottish School of Herbal Medicine in the Masters level course, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Boston, MA, Natural Products Program, and Tai Sophie Institute, Botanical Science Program Columbia, Maryland. 

Dr. Bove works as a consultant and formulator for Gaia Herbs and in collaboration with Gaia Herbs developed a line of children’s herbal products. She is the mother of two healthy, happy, adult children who were raised with herbal medicines and natural lifestyles.

October 5-7
CHRIS MARANO
Chris Marano, MA, BS is a clinical herbalist with a health care practice in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts. He is the founder of Clearpath School of Herbal Medicine dedicated to the teaching of holistic health, herbalism and Earth-based wisdom; and Clearpath Herbals, offering health consultations and high-quality, custom-blended herbal preparations. Chris teaches clinical herbalism at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and is President of the Northeast Herbal Association (NEHA).

Chris' experience draws upon Chinese, Native American and Western healing traditions. He has degrees in pre-medicine, Chinese philosophy and science education from Columbia University, a graduate degree from The Herbal Therapeutics School of Botanic Medicine, Zen and Chinese philosophy training from the Institute of Chung-hwa Chinese and Buddhist Culture, and training in Cherokee and Annishnabe traditions. In addition to teaching programs through Clearpath Herbals, Chris is a teacher of meditation.



Together, these clinical herbalists and educators bring thousands of hours of experience with people and plant medicines as well as a wealth of learning from Indigenous, Aryuvedic, Eastern & Western traditions. Additional information about our teachers as well as photos and links will be added to this page throughout January.



As with all of our programs at Heartstone, activities will combine lecture & discussion, experiential activities, small group discussions, and adventures out on the land such as weed walks, morning land "sits", and fire circles.
                          

Students mostly tent on the land with or stay in our teaching yurt or small bunkhouse. Most meals, supplies and handouts are included in the tuition of $1400. We offer some work trades for up to $250 off tuition (exchanged at $10/hour) and a few partial scholarships.  Due to limited number of participants, we require a $250 non-refundable deposit to hold a place in the program. 

Please note that this course is not intended as a beginning course in herbal medicine.
The program is open to 30 participants and will fill quickly. So please register soon if you're eager to join us.



As time allows, Kara will be available to give individual herbal consults before the program begins on friday.  The cost of these private consultations is not included in the tuition.
